This living room in Penn, Wolverhampton had a fabric roman-style blind on its double casement window, which was taken down and replaced with full height composite bifold shutters in Pure White with 76mm louvres.
The window itself is a double window, two fixed panes side by side, each with a small top opener for ventilation. A standard hinged shutter here would swing open further into the room due to the size of the windows, but bifold shutters solve that: each pair of panels hinges together and folds back on itself, concertina-style, so they sit much closer to the frame when open rather than projecting out into the living space.

When open, the shutters fold back neatly to each side, sitting close to the frame and staying out of the way. When closed, the two pairs of panels come together to cover the whole window as one continuous set of shutters, with 76mm louvres letting in plenty of light while still giving full privacy and control whenever it’s needed.

Against the dark, moody wall colour and ornate cornicing in this room, Pure White gives a clean, modern contrast rather than fighting the existing decor, and the fact the shutters fold flat rather than bunching up (the way the old blind did) keeps the window looking sharp whether they’re open or closed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do bifold shutters block as much light as fixed panel shutters?
Not really, both let in a similar amount of light when fully open. The real difference is how much room they take up. A single hinged panel has to swing further out into the room to open fully, while bifold panels fold back on themselves and stack compactly to the side, so they're a better fit near furniture, sofas, or walkways.
Are bifold shutters a good replacement for an old blind or curtain?
Yes, especially on double or wide windows. Unlike a blind that has to be lifted or a curtain that needs drawing back, bifold shutters fold flush against the frame, so they never bunch up or block part of the window.
