Tier on tier shutters are the most flexible option in our range, the answer for any room where you want to keep the light coming in but the world peering out at bay. The window is divided horizontally into two independent sets of panels: top and bottom open, tilt and close completely separately from one another. How tier-on-tier shutters work
A tier-on-tier shutter splits a window into two completely separate units stacked one above the other. Each tier has its own pair of panels, its own hinges, and its own tilt rod. The most common configuration is a 50/50 split, but on taller sash windows we'll often go 60/40 or 40/60 to land the divide on an existing meeting rail or transom line.
In practice that gives you four distinct settings on every window. Open the top, close the bottom, daylight in, no one looking in. Close them both for a fully private room. Open them both for maximum light and a clear view out. Or tilt the louvres to different angles top and bottom for a softer in-between.
Who tier-on-tier shutters are ideal for
Tier on tier shutters are usually the right answer in any of these scenarios, and we fit them every week across the West Midlands.
- Street-facing rooms where you want light without putting yourself on show. Very common in Black Country terraces with little or no front garden, where the bay sits close to the pavement.
- Ground-floor front rooms overlooking a busy road. Close the bottom tier for privacy and open the top to keep the room feeling bright.
- Bedrooms where you want morning light without being on view. Open the top at dawn, leave the bottom firmly shut while you're getting ready.
- Anyone currently relying on net curtains. Tier-on-tier does the same job, and the difference from the kerb is dramatic.
- Tall windows where full-height shutters would block too much light. Splitting them into two tiers keeps things feeling lighter and more flexible.
Tier-on-tier for bay windows and traditional homes
Tier-on-tier looks especially at home on taller sash windows and on the bay-fronted Victorian and Edwardian houses that line streets right across the West Midlands. The visual division between the two tiers naturally echoes the meeting rail of a traditional sash window and the proportions you find in period properties around Wolverhampton, Dudley and the older parts of the Birmingham suburbs.

What to expect from your free home survey to fit
Every job starts with a free home survey. Brad, Andy or Jack will pop round at a time that suits you (usually evenings or weekends) to look at your windows, talk through styles, materials and finishes, and measure every opening to the millimetre. We don't ask homeowners to self-measure, and we don't sub-contract surveys to a national franchise.
Once you've approved the design, your shutters are built to those exact dimensions in our partner workshop. Typical lead time is around 10 to 12 weeks (3 to 4 on some ranges). You can read the full timeline breakdown if you want the detail.
Fitting is usually a single day, two of us on site, dust sheets down, hoover out at the end. And every shutter we fit is backed by our 5-year guarantee on materials and workmanship.
