Special shaped shutters are the ones we make for windows that aren't standard rectangles: arched tops, gable-end triangles, circular portholes, angled tops following a roofline, or anything else that won't be defined by width and height alone. Every Greystone shutter is made to measure, but these get an extra step at the survey. What counts as a special shaped window?
The phrase covers a much wider range of windows than people realise. The most common we see in West Midlands homes is the arched top, either a full semicircular arch sitting over a rectangular base, or a quarter-arch where just one upper corner is rounded off.
After that come gable-end triangles in modern barn-conversion-style self-builds, circular portholes in contemporary homes, angled tops following the line of a roof, and unusually narrow or oversized openings that simply don't sit within standard shutter sizing.
How special shaped shutters are made
The process starts with a physical template. Andy or Brad will take a precise cardboard cut-out, or, on more complex shapes, a digital template, of the exact window opening during the free home visit. That template goes directly to manufacture and is the shape the shutter frame is built to.
For a clean arched window the shutter has matching curved top panels. For an angled top, the frame is cut to follow the slope exactly. For a porthole, the whole shutter is round. On a combined window we'll often pair a shaped top section with our full height or bay window configuration below.

Arched windows are particularly common in the Victorian and Edwardian properties across Wolverhampton, Dudley and Birmingham, these were homes built with proper architectural detail and they deserve window treatments to match.
We've fitted special shaped shutters into arched stair windows on Tettenhall semis, full quarter-arches above bay windows in Dudley terraces, and triangular gable ends on modern self-builds out towards the edge of the region. We had some bug screens fitted to our bi fold doors. They were fantastic in coming out and measuring and then came out again to ensure it was fully accurate.
