Waterproof shutters are a small specification change that makes a big difference in bathrooms, kitchens and any room where steam, splashes and humidity are part of daily life. Standard timber or MDF shutters look beautiful in a living room, but in a bathroom they'll absorb moisture, warp, and start to discolour over time. Why bathrooms and kitchens need specialist waterproof shutters
Standard plantation shutters are usually made from solid hardwood (basswood or paulownia) or a painted MDF. Both are stunning materials in dry rooms, but bathrooms, en suites, shower rooms and even kitchens near a busy hob put them under constant moisture stress.
Steam swells the timber slightly each shower, condensation sits in the louvres overnight, and over the course of a year or two you start to see warping at the panel edges, paint peeling on MDF surfaces, and tannin bleed-through on darker stains. Our waterproof range solves this completely.
Benefits of waterproof shutters in a bathroom
The panels and louvres are made from an ABS polymer composite, a dense, dimensionally stable material that doesn't absorb water, won't warp from temperature change, and won't peel or yellow. Visually identical to a painted timber shutter once it's up.
- No warping or swelling. Panels stay flat and louvres keep tracking smoothly years down the line.
- Properly wipe-clean. A damp cloth or mild bathroom cleaner is all you need, nothing to scrub between the slats.
- Adjustable privacy that beats frosted glass. Frosted gives you privacy 24/7; shutters let you choose.
- Much healthier than a fabric blind. Roller and roman blinds in a bathroom turn into mould magnets. Composite shutters have no fabric to grow on.
- Good insulation on a small, cold window. A solid shutter pulled tight at night noticeably reduces cold draughts and condensation.
Style options for waterproof shutters
Waterproof shutters come in the same styles as the rest of our range. Full height is by far the most popular choice in bathrooms, a single clean panel from sill to head, with louvres adjusted to suit the time of day.
For lower bathroom windows where the cill sits at chest height, cafe style covers just the bottom half, keeping the room bright at eye level while giving privacy where you need it.
Tier-on-tier is a good option if your bathroom overlooks a close neighbour, letting you open the top half for ventilation while keeping the bottom firmly closed. The only style not available in the waterproof material is our Shutter & Shade integrated blind.
What to expect from your free home survey to fit
Every job starts with a free home survey. Brad, Andy or Jack will pop round at a time that suits you (usually evenings or weekends) to look at your windows, talk through styles, materials and finishes, and measure every opening to the millimetre. We don't ask homeowners to self-measure, and we don't sub-contract surveys to a national franchise.
Once you've approved the design, your shutters are built to those exact dimensions in our partner workshop. Typical lead time is around 10 to 12 weeks, though some ranges can be ready in around 4 weeks depending on style. You can read the full timeline breakdown if you want the detail.
Fitting is usually a single day, two of us on site, dust sheets down, hoover out at the end. And every shutter we fit is backed by our 5-year guarantee on materials and workmanship.

We had some bug screens fitted to our bi fold doors. They were fantastic in coming out and measuring and then came out again to ensure it was fully accurate.
