Solid panel shutters are our traditional alternative to the louvred plantation shutter: flat, solid wooden panels that hinge across the window like a fitted cabinet door, with no slats and no tilt rods. When the panels are folded back the window is completely clear; when they're closed the room goes properly dark. The look is borrowed straight from Victorian and Georgian interior joinery. What are solid panel shutters?
The defining feature is right there in the name: each panel is one continuous piece of timber, framed and panelled in the traditional joinery style, with no horizontal slats. Where a plantation shutter lets you tilt the louvres to filter light, a solid panel is binary, fully open or fully closed.
The design isn't new. In Victorian and Georgian houses, internal solid shutters were standard kit, folded neatly into the window reveal during the day and pulled across at night for blackout, insulation, security and noise. Most originals have been lost over time; ours recreate the look cleanly.
Benefits of solid panel shutters
If you want the period look, and a genuinely dark, quiet, warm room, this is the configuration we'd start the conversation with.
- Full blackout when closed. No slat gaps, close the panels and the window is genuinely sealed against light.
- Excellent insulation. A continuous timber panel creates a complete thermal barrier across the window.
- The warm classic panelled look. The same proportions and panelling you'd find in original Victorian or Georgian woodwork.
- Very low maintenance. No louvres to dust, no tilt rods to wipe, a quick wipe of the panel face is the entire upkeep.
- Better noise reduction than louvre shutters. A solid timber panel is denser and more acoustically opaque than a slatted one.
Which homes and rooms suit solid panel shutters?
They sit most naturally in period and character properties, Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, Georgian townhouses and anything else built before the Second World War. In a properly restored period property, solid panel shutters can pass for original joinery.
Room by room: bedrooms are the single most popular choice, mostly because of the blackout. If you want the louvre look but still need a proper blackout, Shutter & Shade is the alternative. Studies and home offices come a close second, especially for anyone working to a screen who needs total control over glare.
What to expect from your free home survey to fit
Every job starts with a free home survey. Brad, Andy or Jack will pop round at a time that suits you (usually evenings or weekends) to look at your windows, talk through styles, materials and finishes, and measure every opening to the millimetre. We don't ask homeowners to self-measure, and we don't sub-contract surveys to a national franchise.
Once you've approved the design, your shutters are built to those exact dimensions in our partner workshop. Typical lead time is around 10 to 12 weeks, though some ranges can be ready in around 4 weeks depending on style. You can read the full timeline breakdown if you want the detail.
Fitting is usually a single day, two of us on site, dust sheets down, hoover out at the end. And every shutter we fit is backed by our 5-year guarantee on materials and workmanship.

We had some bug screens fitted to our bi fold doors. They were fantastic in coming out and measuring and then came out again to ensure it was fully accurate.
