French door shutters are one of the cleanest ways to finish a kitchen-diner, conservatory or any room where a set of French or patio doors leads out to the garden. Unlike a curtain or blind, the shutters mount directly onto the doors themselves, so the doors keep opening and closing exactly as they should, and there's nothing trailing or piling up on the floor when you swing them wide. How shutters work on French doors
Unlike a window shutter, French door shutters fit directly to the door itself rather than to the surrounding frame or reveal. Each panel is made to match the dimensions of the individual door and includes precise cut-outs for the handle, lock mechanism, hinges and any other hardware on the inside of the door.
The result is that the door opens and closes completely freely with the shutters attached, no awkward catch on the handle, no obstruction at the hinge side, no compromise on getting out into the garden. When the doors are open, the shutters move with them; when they're closed, you get the same light control and privacy as any window shutter.
Benefits of shutters on French doors
It's a far neater finish than curtains, which inevitably bunch up by the doorway and end up dragged across the floor every time you head outside.
- The doors still work like doors. Cut-outs around the handle and hardware mean you keep using your French doors exactly as you do now.
- No curtain track, no curtain rail. Free up the wall space above the doors and lose the heavy fabric piled in the corners.

Tracked shutters for wider openings
If your opening is wider than a standard pair of French doors, wide bifolds, large patio door shutters, or a set of three or four panels that span the back of a kitchen-diner extension, door-mounted shutters aren't always the right call.
In those cases we use tracked shutters instead, which slide along a discreet rail mounted above the opening rather than hinging off the doors themselves. They work on the same plantation-shutter principle but cover much wider spans cleanly. It's a configuration we'll talk you through at the free home visit.
What to expect from your free home survey to fit
Every job starts with a free home survey. Brad, Andy or Jack will pop round at a time that suits you (usually evenings or weekends) to look at your windows, talk through styles, materials and finishes, and measure every opening to the millimetre. We don't ask homeowners to self-measure, and we don't sub-contract surveys to a national franchise.
Once you've approved the design, your shutters are built to those exact dimensions in our partner workshop. Typical lead time is around 10 to 12 weeks, though some ranges can be ready in around 4 weeks depending on style. You can read the full timeline breakdown if you want the detail.
Fitting is usually a single day, two of us on site, dust sheets down, hoover out at the end. And every shutter we fit is backed by our 5-year guarantee on materials and workmanship.
