Tracked shutters are the answer to any opening that's simply too wide for a traditional hinged panel, most often a patio door, a set of bifolds, or one of those increasingly common 3m-plus rear glazing runs in a modern kitchen-diner extension. Instead of swinging open from a hinge, the panels glide left and right along a slim concealed track fixed above the opening. The result is a plantation-shutter look that scales cleanly to spans that would be physically unworkable on hinges. Browse our full range of styles for context.
What are tracked shutters?
A tracked shutter looks like any other plantation shutter once it's up: the same panels, the same louvres, the same finishes you'd find on our full height shutters. What's different is the way they're hung. The panels are still hinged together to each other, but rather than pivoting off a fixed side frame, the whole assembly is suspended from rollers running along a discreet horizontal track fixed at the top of the opening.
To open up the window or door, you slide the panels sideways (and fold them against each other if the run is long), like glass sliding doors or a bifold wardrobe. Some people call them sliding shutters for exactly that reason. A 3m wide patio door would need side-hinged panels so large they'd be heavy and likely sag over time. With a track, the panels can be smaller and more numerous, gliding effortlessly aside in seconds.
When tracked shutters make sense
On large doors and openings, tracked shutters (or our BlindScreen®) are really the only window dressings that work properly, because they're the only ones you can move completely out of the way so the door or window gets used as designed. A few of the situations where that matters most.
- Wide patio doors. Sliding or lift-and-slide doors 2.5m, 3m or more across, hinges stop being practical at that scale.
- Bifold openings. Tracked shutters slide across the full width for total privacy when the bifolds are closed, then stack to one side when you want them out of the way.
- Room dividers. Run tracked shutters across the opening between two zones, instant flexible divider.
- Anywhere standard shutters would block a walkway. Tracked panels stack to one side against the wall when not in use, so the room stays clear. They still swing in a touch when you're folding them open, just not enough to get in the way.
Light control and privacy on large openings
On a large patio door or bifold opening you don't always want all-or-nothing privacy, and tracked shutters give you proper zoned control over the whole run. Slide one panel aside to uncover the section of the door you actually walk through, leave the rest covered.
Stack all panels to one side for fully clear access to the garden. Want some sun in but not the neighbours? Pull the panels back across and tilt the louvres exactly as you would on any other plantation shutter, the louvre mechanism is identical on every panel along the track.
What to expect from your free home survey to fit
Every job starts with a free home survey. Brad, Andy or Jack will pop round at a time that suits you (usually evenings or weekends) to look at your windows, talk through styles, materials and finishes, and measure every opening to the millimetre. We don't ask homeowners to self-measure, and we don't sub-contract surveys to a national franchise.
Once you've approved the design, your shutters are built to those exact dimensions in our partner workshop. Typical lead time is around 10 to 12 weeks, though some ranges can be ready in around 4 weeks depending on style. You can read the full timeline breakdown if you want the detail.
Fitting is usually a single day, two of us on site, dust sheets down, hoover out at the end. And every shutter we fit is backed by our 5-year guarantee on materials and workmanship.
Tracked shutters across the West Midlands
