Shutter & Shade is our most-requested solution for bedrooms that need to be really, properly dark. It's a Greystone Shutters configuration that pairs our standard made-to- measure plantation shutters with a hidden blackout blind built in behind the panels. Invisible when you don't need it, devastatingly effective when you do. We fit it across the West Midlands every week for parents of young children, shift workers, and anyone who's had enough of being woken at 4am by a summer sunrise. What is Shutter & Shade?
Standard plantation shutters tilt to dim a room beautifully, but even with the louvres pulled tight there's always some light spilling through the slats. Shutter & Shade fixes that by mounting a fabric blackout blind on a discreet roller behind the shutter panel itself.
During the day the blind sits rolled up inside the frame and is completely invisible, the room looks like it has a perfectly normal set of shutters. When you need the room dark, you pull the blind down behind the shutters and the room drops into near-darkness.
As a bonus, the two layers together create real insulation, noticeably warmer in winter and cooler under a south-facing summer sun. And if energy efficiency is the priority, we can also fit our BlindScreen® behind a shutter panel as a higher-spec alternative to the standard fabric blind. You keep the shutter look on the inside and gain BlindScreen's thermal performance, the best of both worlds.

How dark does it get?
We try to be honest about this on the home visit and we'll be honest here too: Shutter & Shade gives near-blackout, not total blackout. The blind itself is an opaque blackout fabric, but a small amount of light can creep in around the edges of the window reveal depending on how the original frame sits in the brickwork.
In a baby's nursery or a shift worker's bedroom the difference compared to standard shutters or to blackout curtains is dramatic, most customers describe it as transformative for sleep, particularly through summer. If you genuinely need zero light at all, we'd recommend pairing Shutter & Shade with our external BlindScreen® system.
What to expect from your free home survey to fit
Every job starts with a free home survey. Brad, Andy or Jack will pop round at a time that suits you (usually evenings or weekends) to look at your windows, talk through styles, materials and finishes, and measure every opening to the millimetre. We don't ask homeowners to self-measure, and we don't sub-contract surveys to a national franchise.
Once you've approved the design, your shutters are built to those exact dimensions in our partner workshop. Typical lead time is around 10 to 12 weeks, though some ranges can be ready in around 4 weeks depending on style. You can read the full timeline breakdown if you want the detail.
Fitting is usually a single day, two of us on site, dust sheets down, hoover out at the end. And every shutter we fit is backed by our 5-year guarantee on materials and workmanship.
