Shutter Maintenance

Shutter Maintenance

One of the biggest advantages of shutters is how easy they are to look after. Unlike curtains or blinds, which often need to be taken down to clean properly or dry cleaned, shutters stay firmly in place while you clean them, so you never lose your privacy or light control.

Keeping them looking their best doesn’t require any special products or extra effort. In fact, caring for your shutters is very similar to cleaning other surfaces around your home.

For regular care, simply dust your shutters every so often using a feather duster, microfibre cloth, or the soft brush attachment on your vacuum. Opening the louvres slightly makes it easy to wipe away any dust that settles on them.

If you notice light marks or fingerprints from everyday use, a gentle wipe with a microfibre cloth is usually all that’s needed. For wooden shutters, a small amount of quality furniture polish once or twice a year will help keep them looking fresh.

“I’m worried I’ll damage my shutters” There’s no need to worry. Our shutters are made from durable materials such as engineered wood, hardwood, or waterproof ABS, all designed to stand up to daily life.

For small smudges or marks, a soft, slightly damp cloth or an alcohol-free baby wipe works well. Just be sure to dry the area afterwards and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. If you’re cleaning wooden shutters, it’s best to keep moisture to a minimum by using a dry cloth.

Material-Specific Care at a Glance

  • Wooden Shutters Dust regularly and polish lightly every 6–12 months. Avoid excess moisture and prolonged direct sunlight.
  • ABS or Composite Shutters Wipe down with a mild soapy solution if needed. Avoid abrasive pads or strong cleaning products.

“Will I still be able to clean my windows?” Of course you can! Your shutters are measured and fitted so they open fully and give you easy access to the window and frame behind them. You’ll be able to clean your windows just as you normally would, while also keeping the shutters dust-free.

“But what if I spill something on them?” Let’s say you’re enjoying a movie night with the family and in the excitement you knock your cuppa over and it splashes up your shutters. Not to worry, it happens to the best of us. Just ask Andy how he knows.

If anything spills, simply blot it with a dry cloth or tea towel, then wipe the area gently, just as you would with a coffee table or worktop. It’s a simple fix, and your shutters will soon look as good as new.
