How a Tipton Homeowner Finally Solved Her Privacy Problem

How a Tipton Homeowner Finally Solved Her Privacy Problem

When a homeowner in Tipton got in touch with us, she had a problem that many people living on a busy street will recognise.

Her home had three windows across the front, (two in her home office and one in the living room) plus a large set of sliding doors that opened directly onto the street side of the property. Every room she spent time in during the day felt exposed.

She’d tried heavy curtains, but drawing them made the rooms feel dark and enclosed. Leaving them open meant dealing with glare on the TV in the evenings and feeling visible to anyone walking past during the day. It was a constant compromise, and one she’d been putting up with for longer than she wanted to admit.

She wanted privacy. She wanted light. And she wanted the front of her home to look considered and cohesive rather than pieced together.

It’s a problem we see regularly across the West Midlands, from Wolverhampton to Rowley Regis… and is exactly the kind of challenge that made-to-measure plantation shutters are built to solve.

The Brief: Privacy Across the Whole Front of the House

What made this project particularly satisfying was the scope of it. Rather than addressing one room at a time, the homeowner decided to do the whole front of the house in one go. It’s a decision that made an enormous difference to the finished result.

Street-facing rooms present a specific challenge that curtains and standard blinds struggle to solve well. You need to control visibility from outside without blocking the natural light that makes a room feel alive. Shutters do this better than almost any other window covering, because the adjustable louvres give you genuine control. Tilt them one way and you flood the room with daylight while anyone walking past sees only a clean white panel. Tilt them further and you can reduce glare from direct sunlight without closing off the room entirely. It’s a level of nuance that curtains simply can’t offer, which are either open or closed, there’s no middle ground.

For the home office windows, full height Boston shutters were the right choice. The Boston range is crafted from solid hardwood with an engineered wood frame, a combination that gives it a high quality, robust build while keeping it well within reach of most budgets. We fitted them with 76mm louvres, which suited the proportions of the windows well: substantial enough to look purposeful from the street, but not so large as to overwhelm the room from inside. The finish was Pure White, giving the rooms a crisp, bright feel and creating a clean, uniform appearance.

Solving the Sliding Door Problem

The living room presented a different challenge. Alongside the front-facing window, there was a large set of sliding doors, a wide expanse of glass that was almost impossible to dress in a way that felt both practical and attractive.

The curtains that had been hanging there blocked a significant amount of light when drawn, and did nothing to reduce the glare that made watching TV uncomfortable on sunny afternoons.

The solution was tracked shutters, also in the Boston range. Tracked shutters are designed specifically for large expanses of glass, sliding along a track in front of the door rather than folding or swinging.

When the homeowner wants the doors fully open, the panels slide back and stack neatly. When she wants privacy, or simply needs to take the edge off the afternoon sun without plunging the room into darkness they glide across to cover as much or as little of the opening as needed. It’s a genuinely elegant solution to a problem that often catches people out when they’re planning a shutter installation.

Matching the tracked shutters to the same range and colour as the office windows meant the entire front of the house now reads as one coherent design decision.

What a Difference Consistency Makes

One of the things we notice most on installations like this is how much the consistency matters. Individual shutters at individual windows look good. Shutters running across every front-facing window and door, all made to measure, all in the same finish, all sitting flush within their frames just look exceptional.

From the street, the property now has a symmetry and intentionality that it lacked before. The Pure White finish draws the eye without shouting. The louvres sit at the same angle across each window. There are no curtains bunched unevenly, no mismatched blinds at different heights. Just a clean, polished frontage that gives the house genuine kerb appeal.

From inside, the rooms feel brighter and more refined. The homeowner can work in her office during the day with full natural light and no concern about being overlooked. The living room, even with its large sliding doors, feels private and comfortable, and for the first time, she can watch TV in the afternoon without the glare that had become part of daily life.

Why Plantation Shutters Are a Long-Term Investment

The Boston range is built to last. Solid hardwood panels with a hard-wearing frame mean these shutters are designed for everyday use over many years, not just as a decorative feature. They’re easy to wipe down, they don’t fade or warp under normal conditions, and they won’t need replacing the way fabric curtains eventually do.

There’s also a thermal benefit worth mentioning. Windows are responsible for around 18% of a home’s heat loss, and well-fitted shutters with their edge-to-edge structure can meaningfully reduce that. In a home office where you’re spending long hours, that kind of thermal comfort matters.

The minimum of a five-year warranty (10 years with some materials) that comes with every installation gives additional peace of mind, but in our experience, it’s rarely needed. These are shutters built to become a permanent part of the home.

FAQ

Can plantation shutters give me privacy without making my rooms dark? This is one of the things shutters do better than almost any other window covering. The adjustable louvres let you control exactly how much light enters the room and at what angle, so you can maintain privacy from the street while keeping the room bright. Unlike curtains, which are either open or closed, shutters give you a genuine middle ground.

Can shutters help with glare on the TV? Absolutely. Because you can tilt the louvres to redirect light rather than simply block it, shutters are particularly effective at reducing glare without darkening a room. This makes them an excellent choice for living rooms where afternoon sun on the television is a regular frustration.

Are shutters better than curtains for street-facing windows? For most homeowners with street-facing rooms, yes. Curtains tend to offer two options ( fully open or fully closed) which means you’re often choosing between privacy and light. Shutters give you far more control, and because they’re made to measure and fitted within the window frame, they also look neater and more intentional both inside and out.

What are Boston plantation shutters made from? The Boston range is crafted from solid hardwood panels with an engineered wood frame. This combination gives a high quality, robust finish that’s hard-wearing and built for daily use over many years.

What louvre size should I choose? Louvre size should reflect the proportions of your window and the room. Smaller louvres (47mm) suit cottage-style or smaller windows, while larger louvres (76mm, 89mm or 114mm) work well on bigger windows and give a more contemporary feel. For the Tipton installation, we chose 76mm louvres which are a versatile mid-size that works well on standard front-of-house windows. We’ll always advise on the right size during your home consultation.

Can shutters be fitted to sliding doors? Yes. Tracked shutters are specifically designed for large expanses of glass including sliding and bi-fold doors. The panels slide along a track rather than folding or swinging, making them practical for doors you use regularly while still giving you full control over privacy and light.

Do shutters help keep a home warm? They do. Windows account for around 18% of a home’s heat loss, and the edge-to-edge structure of well-fitted shutters provides an additional layer of thermal insulation. They also help reduce draughts, which makes a noticeable difference in rooms where you spend a lot of time.

How long do plantation shutters last? Made-to-measure hardwood shutters are designed to last for many years with minimal maintenance. Unlike fabric blinds or curtains, they don’t fade, sag or need replacing over time. All of our shutters come with a minimum of a five-year warranty, and in practice they typically last much, much longer than that.

Do you offer a free consultation? Yes. We offer a free, no-obligation home consultation where we visit your property, measure your windows, and help you choose the right style, material and finish for your home. There’s no pressure and no commitment required.
